Terms you'll come across

Lyophilised

Freeze-dried. Peptides are supplied as a lyophilised powder because it is considerably more stable in transport and long-term storage than a solution.

Reconstitution

The process of dissolving a lyophilised peptide in a suitable solvent to produce a solution for laboratory work.

Bacteriostatic water

Sterile water containing a small amount of benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth. Commonly used as a reconstitution solvent.

Concentration (mg/ml)

The mass of peptide divided by the volume of solvent it is dissolved in. Our concentration calculator works this out for you.

Certificate of Analysis (COA)

Documentation reporting the analytical testing carried out on a batch, including its purity.

Purity

The proportion of the material that is the target peptide, usually determined by HPLC and expressed as a percentage.

Half-life

The time taken for half of a compound to be eliminated or degraded under given conditions. Often used to compare analogues such as CJC-1295 with and without DAC.

Agonist

A compound that binds a receptor and activates it, producing a response. A triple agonist acts at three receptor types.

Analogue

A compound structurally similar to another, often modified to alter stability, receptor selectivity or half-life.

Freeze-thaw cycle

One round of freezing and thawing. Repeated cycles gradually degrade peptide stability and are best minimised.
